3 Ways Technology Is Making You Anxious

Technology really has come a long way from sitting in front of that huge monitor and listening to those strange noises that sounded like something from another world before you were actually logged onto the “worldwide web”. The awe-inspiring part of it all is that it’s growing so much every day, and most of us would have never imagined that we’d ever be able to talk on a watch!  However, these great advances in technology come with their own downfalls: technology can actually work in different ways to cause anxiety. Sometimes we can feel it coming on and sometimes it sneaks up on us and feels like something we’ve never experienced. This is one aspect that makes anxiety so disabling and exhausting. It’s pretty obvious that there’s no way to avoid technology because we use it in our daily lives, but if you find yourself suffering from some of those distracting symptoms, CBDfx makes gummies to help anxiety. This company creates high-quality gummies that are pre-measured out as low as 5 mg per gummy so you can go about your day anxiety free! And as amazing as they are, you’re probably still wondering how technology is causing more anxiety in all of our lives. We’re going to get into that now!

Too Much Information

It’s no exaggeration to say that we’ve literally got the world at our fingertips at all times. When we have a question we hop on our smartphones or laptop and google will provide us with around 300,000,000 results in a matter of seconds. It’s no wonder we’ve become accustomed to instant gratification! This is helpful for the majority of things in our lives, but sometimes this influx of information can be overwhelming. This is most certainly true for those instances in our lives where we’re seeking information to comfort ourselves in some way. An example of this could be when we’re sick, some of us turn to the internet and try to self-diagnose. If you’ve ever done this, you know that this only leads to more anxiety because those strep throat symptoms you were looking up can quickly morph into something deadly (or so you think in the given moment), until you go to the doctor and they tell you to stay off WebMD. If this has happened to you, it’s something that scientists call “information anxiety”. It’s just too much information for us to process, and we need to filter it.

Quick Fix: In an attempt to filter the information that comes your way, only intake information that is needed at that moment. It’s easy to fall down the perpetual rabbit hole of information, so set limits on what you allow yourself to absorb.

Technology Induced Isolation

Have you ever noticed that you can get so wrapped up in your social media feeds, messages, and other apps that hours can pass you by before you even notice? Technology has the power to isolate us in this way, but it’s so ironic because it was all meant to bring us closer together. Some people have become so much more comfortable communicating via text message or social media that they don’t even know how to properly communicate when faced with social situations. As a result of the current pandemic that we are hopefully making our way out of, millions of people across the world were instructed to stay inside and only go out for essentials. This meant more technology and isolation as many people switched over to working remotely. We’re already conducting so much of our daily lives through technology, so adding this aspect into the mix just means that we’re delving deeper into that isolation.

Quick Fix: It’s not like you’re going to delete all of your social accounts anytime soon, so you just have to make sure you make it a point to engage in face to face interactions. For instance, when you’re in the elevator with someone, don’t escape into your phone (like most of us do), look up, and say hello! In fact, make it a point to have conversations and make connections when possible without using technology as a crutch.

Social Media Anxieties

One of the negative aspects associated with social media is the constant habit of comparing yourself to others. This can produce feelings of anxiety for a number of reasons such as thinking that you’re not “keeping up” with your peers, or you might even think that you’re not as “liked” as others, but honestly, we all have our own personal insecurities that these anxieties can feed off of.

Quick Fix: It’s too easy to get caught up in social media, and that’s why you should take advantage of the timer that’s built into your iPhone that you can use to place self-imposed limits on all of your apps. If you don’t have an iPhone, just manually place those limits on your social media use. If you really feel like you need a detox, delete the app completely and take some time off to focus on yourself. And remember, people only portray themselves in the light they want you to see them online!
