The DIA Parrot wireless photo frame by Nodesign deconstructs the LCD, separating the backlighting from the display unit to create a luminous projection effect. Usually, an LCD unit is sandwiched with its opaque backlight, hiding the display’s smoky windowpane quality. By separating the two, the DIA Parrot celebrates the qualities of the LCD while providing a new/old lightboxing effect. The “DIA frame was born from the idea that it is impossible to represent a printed image on a photo frame,” write designers Jean-Louis Frechin and Uros Petrevski. “So our frame is close to a slide film, with the quality of transparence, light and format of professional Ektachrome.” It’s a remarkable example of the surprising effects designers can achieve by thinking through available technologies.
