Liechtenstein is a very, very small country in Europe. By “very small,” I mean practically microscopic. Being smaller than the US state of Rhode Island by a lot. Rhode Island is 1,045 square miles (land coverage). Liechtenstein? 61 square miles.
Sixty-one. Square miles.
It has a population of 35,000 and, for a mere $70,000 per day, you can rent the country. There are a few caveats… well, one. You have to rent for at least two nights. So what are the perks of renting your own nation? According to the listing, you will be able to…
- Rename City Streets
- Print Your Own (temporary) Currency
- Carve Logos Into Mountainsides
- Have Marching Bands Mark Your Arrival
- Keys to Cities
- Personal Fireworks
And, believe me, the list goes on.
Of course, if renting all of Liechtenstein isn’t your thing, or you simply don’t want quasi-control of your own independent nation, you can rent out one of several villages in either Germany, Austria or Switzerland for between $50,000 and $65,000 per night.
Personally, if you’re smart you’d rent a village and pretend to be mayor for a bit. That way, you can get a feel for public service and, if you like it, you can upgrade to the whole country package. Who knows — this may have been how Doctor Doom came upon Latveria.
