An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away — In Menopausal Women

The adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” has always been taught to children as fact, even though as you grow older you discover that it was little more than a propaganda line that parents used to trick their kids into eating healthy. Well, turns out that it may not have been all that wrong — provided you’re a post-menopausal woman.

A study conducted at Florida State University tested 160 women who ate one of two things for a year: dried apples or prunes. What did they find? The women who ate the dried apples saw a 23% drop in low-density lipoprotein, known more commonly as “bad cholesterol.” At the same time, their high-density lipoprotein, aka “good cholesterol,” increased by 4%.

In more good news for apple lovers, while the apple diet did add 240 calories to their diet each day, the women wound up losing an average of 3.3 pounds. So while apples may not be broccoli, they are certainly good for you.

Now the researchers intend to expand their study to cover all women, pre, post or… maybe even “in progress” menopausal.
