Every time there’s any sort of significant comet passage, the doomsday prophets start talking.
In this case, it was Elenin, a 1.2 mile hunk of rock and ice that didn’t pass close enough to Earth to even be seen with long-range telescopes. However, internet bloggers decided that the appearance of Elenin was responsible for several major disasters, and some even speculated that it could be the sign of the apocalypse. Aren’t we a little bit, you know, old for thinking that comets are a sign of the end of the world?
Well, it looks like Elenin has disintegrated, becoming nothing more than a cluster of fragmented rock and ice. If there’s anything left of Elenin in 12,000 years, that’s the next time it could even be remotely close to Earth’s orbit.
