Sci-fi films have a special place in people’s hearts. Though they seldom get the recognition they deserve from big wigs like the Academy, science fiction movies capture people’s imagination like no other genre does. Rooted in reality, they deal with concepts that are larger than life – that’s what makes them tick. That’s why it resonates with children and adults alike. There’s something in it for everyone to love and enjoy.
One of the most popular sub-categories of sci-fi movies is Space Movies. Stunning visual effects morphed with poignant story telling makes space films so popular among the masses. Thanks to the advancement of computer technology and graphics in this millennium, our generation has seen some of the most remarkable space movies till date.
- The Martian (2015)
“During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.” – IMDb (8.1/10)
This movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same title has been lauded as one of the best sci-fi movies ever. With Ridley Scott as its director and Matt Damon in the lead role, not much could have gone wrong with it. This is Hollywood’s first realistic look at what living on Mars would look like if it were to ever happen and the visual effects do not disappoint. Supported by a cast containing Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara and Michael Pena this movie did justice to its origin. Humane and humorous, The Martian stands out as arguably one of the best movies ever made.
- Wall-E (2008)
“In the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.” – IMDb (8.4/10)
Pixar’s foray into space with a little trash-collecting robot took everyone by surprise by how unexpectedly hard-hitting its message was. It shows a future where the planet is taken over by one big corporation, that instead of delivering on its promise of fixing the earth, breaks it instead and all the people are moved to an ostensibly perfect living station in the outer space where there’s no work, only play. A beautifully animated, wonderfully built movie, Wall-E created ripples and quite rightfully so.
- Gravity (2013)
“A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.” – IMDb (7.9/10)
This movie presents the very human struggle of overcoming past trauma in a visually stunning space package. The main cast consisting of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are left shouldering the whole emotional weight of the movie, and they do not disappoint. It contains what is considered to be one of the most satisfying and wonderful movie endings.
- Interstellar (2014)
“A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity’s survival.” – IMDb (8.6/10)
There are two kinds of people – ones who loved Interstellar and ones who weren’t quite charmed by it. Regardless of which group you belong to, you can’t deny the impact this movie had on this generation of movie-goers. The movie score, cast (Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway etc.) and the mind-blowing special effects help build a kind of world where anything – including the fifth dimension – is possible.
