Amazon iscurrentlyin negotiations with book publishers, trying to work out the details for a “book rental” program. However, unlike the library, renting books from Amazon would cost money.
The concept of “book rentals” is hardly new — there are a wide variety of websites which already offer physical book rentals for a minimal fee. However, Amazon would be among the first to offer a digital book rental service. It can be theorized that the rental service could be used with Amazon’s Kindle eBook reading device, as well as potentially on Amazon’s upcoming tablet PC.
Many publishers aren’t thrilled about the prospect of a book rental service, which is making Amazon’s negotiations difficult. Many of the publishers are afraid that it would “downgrade” the value of the book business.
