In this first special issue of Art-Magazine, we propose to make you discover some of them: from the most famous paintings on the theme of the casino and its games, to lesser-known canvases.

Virtual exhibition

Long before the opening of the first casinos, games with winnings at stake had already existed for a long time. Dice or cards, tavern games or more private circles were already known in the Middle Ages. Among all these games, it was the card games that first inspired painters.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and his cheats

This small virtual exhibition opens with a great classic by the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610). It shows card players whose intentions are quite clear. The canvas has also been named “the cardsharps”. Created in 1594, this painting is currently in the possession of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, United States.

Following Caravagio, several famous artists were inspired by the theme of the card game. Like the Italian master before them, most of them did so in less than glorious days. Valentin de Boulogne, Gerard van Honthorst, Nicolas Régnier and Georges de la Tour all took cheaters as their theme.

Georges de la Tour and the Ace of Diamonds

A little later in time, around 1638, on the same theme of card games, Georges de La Tour (1593-1653) signed a canvas called “The Cheat with the Ace of Diamonds”. This major work by the Lorraine painter is preserved to this day at the Louvre Museum.

In his maturity, the style of this painter would be definitively marked by his influences both cubist and surrealist. Moreno Pincas is a painter of Bulgarian origin. In 1949, at the age of 13, he immigrated to Israel where he studied art and painting. After winning first prize at the Painting Biennial of the Haifa Museum of Modern Art, the talented artist moved to Paris where he also studied Fine Arts.

Moreno Pincas’ works are often full of life, colorful crowds and intense social moments. This is also the case with this painting on the roulette game, with its very crowded table and this slightly strange atmosphere. We do not know, in fact, if his intense looks in the background are scrutinizing the game or if they disapprove of the couple busy playing. It should be noted that the theme of the casino also inspired several paintings by this painter.

Burton Morris and the Pop Art Casino

To close this virtual exhibition on painting and the Casino, we have chosen a work that is part of modernity. With these electric graphics, the art of the American painter Burton Morris is inspired, in fact, much more by the flights of fancy of Andy Warhol and pop art than by classical schools.

The style of this very recognized artist, in the United States but also beyond, is characterized by his always very bright colors with marked contours. His choice of subjects most often goes to cult everyday objects or icons of American pop culture.
