It seems as though mobile is taking over. We’re browsing on our mobiles, we’re buying on our mobiles and we’re also betting on our mobiles. You’d be hard pushed to find a major betting company in this day and age that don’t provide a mobile app that offers a full range of their service.
Last year £3.6 billion was spent gambling online, and a large proportion of this was mobile betting. This figure is continuing to rise despite changes in the law which means the online sector is regulated by the Gambling Commission under a point of consumption regime.
The convenience of mobile betting
Firstly, the key thing is to remember that we wouldn’t be able to bet via our mobile if the technology that supports our smartphones wasn’t in place. The continuous advancements in mobile technology has not only provided the platform for mobile betting, but also allows us to play games on our mobiles. We can now spin the roulette wheel or get dealt a hand of blackjack – most online casino games are now mobile friendly.
In the era that we live in convenience is everything. People have become accustomed to essentially having a handheld laptop in their pockets. Gone are the days where you had to fire up the PC, or laptop in order to use the internet; our mobiles are now the hub of our digital activity.
Better internet connectivity
One thing that has previously deterred people from betting on their mobile is the fear of a poor internet connection. There’s nothing more frustrating than going to place your carefully crafted accumulator at 2:59 on a Saturday afternoon and not being able to due to a poor internet connection.
Luckily for mobile gamblers these days are far gone. With pretty much every public establishment now offering free Wi-Fi, you’re very unlikely to find yourself without a reasonable connection. Couple that with the introduction of 4G and there’s rarely a situation where you’ll have a connectivity problem when placing a bet on your mobile.
Is there a negative to mobile betting?
One of the main biggest negatives when it comes to mobile betting is the temptation. The easy access and instant access to betting platforms can lead to some people betting more often than would do otherwise.
Although the majority of us are comfortable using smaller screens when operating online, some people still don’t like this. For these people betting via a mobile phone can often be more trouble than it’s worth.
The other issue that can be leveled at mobile betting is that once you’re into the platform/app, it’s often not that easy to find the market you’d like to bet on. Compared to betting via a desktop there are many more hoops to jump through in order to find niche betting markets; and because of this betting on mobile can mean players failing to line shop or do the proper research before placing a bet. Many people will skip their usual process and just opt for an appealing bet that’s shoved right under their nose; this is a key example of how in today’s society we put convenience very high on our list of priorities.
