In this morning’s news SMI announced the launch of version 2.0 of their eye tracking glasses which feature a smart phone based recorder. We’re not convinced that this is technology that needs to exist.
This is not SMI’s first go round with the eye tracking glasses that were created with the intent of tracking the gaze of the wearer to see just what they are focusing on in a specific environment. The new 2.0 release of these glasses feature, most notably, a smartphone based recorder in addition to a slimmer design, 60Hz eye-tracking performance and instant setup. While we understand a somewhat practical use for this type of gadget, we also foresee a good number of misuses of a technology that reminds us a good deal of 1984.
