A premium Hulu service has been in the rumor mill for well over a year now, so it doesn’t come as much surprise that Hulu Plus was just announced. For $9.99 a month (let’s call it $10, just to make it sound more ominous) you get ad-supported HD streams of the full current season of your favorite show and back seasons of select shows. Plus, you can watch the shows on your iPhone or iPad.
So, let me get this straight. For $10 a month, I’m still forced to watch ad-supported content? Hmm, so this is a tough decision. I can either buy Hulu Plus and watch shows on a tiny screen with a healthy serving of ads, or I can just keep paying for Netflix, which offers much of the same plus more content than I could ever watch in a lifetime, totally ad-free. That’s a tough one. This is probably worth it for people who are really into new shows, but here’s the deal: you can already watch the most five recent episodes of the available shows on the Hulu free site anyway. So really, why bother? Cut the price in half, then we’ll talk.
The value is in the mobile streaming, not the home-streaming.
I agree. I think I was over critical when I wrote this. The value is there, especially considering how much an average cable bill costs for about 10 times as many ads.
