There could be an Amazon gaming console on the horizon, or at least that’s what the rumor is after Amazon acquired video gaming company Double Helix Games.
While no financials have been disclosed as of yet as far as the acquisition, it has been confirmed that in fact Amazon has acquired gaming studio Double Helix Games. Double Helix Games was founded in 2007 as the culmination of two gaming companies, The Collective, Inc and Shiny Entertainment.
According to Amazon, the acquisition will help Amazon to built “innovative” games for their customers, although some believe that the acquisition is an indication that Amazon intends to release their own gaming console or device. These rumors aren’t entirely unfounded however, last week VG247.com wrote that Amazon plans to launch their own Android gaming device with an expected price point of under $300. The device will supposedly compete with other gaming bigwigs, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo…but that is unknown at this point. The rumors of Amazon’s gaming console are nothing new and shoppers have yet to see anything that resembles a gaming device from them. Additionally the chance that Amazon will be able to go up against the big guns in the gaming side of things and succeed is questionable.
Amazon has dabbled in gaming before as evidenced by their 2012 social gaming development division, but that section of the company has been somewhat silent since then releasing only a few games which have had little impact in the gaming community. This is perhaps where Double Helix Games comes in as they already have a line of impressive (and popular) games and have 20 years of experience in the gaming industry.
So what is to become of games that Double Helix already had in the pipeline? Amazon confirms that they will continue to be supported.
