Someday, your toilet could power your home.
At least, that’s if researchers are successful in their attempts to convert urine into biofuel. The philosophy behind this research is that urine could power microbial fuel cells. Microbial fuel cells generate energy when bacteria in the cells produce electrons after feeding on certain types of sugars.
The concept is certainly interesting, but it seems to be difficult to actually implement. Right now, initial tests on using urine for biofuel have only produced extremelyminusculeamounts of power. The researchers are currently looking into ways to miniaturize and modify the fuel cells to maximize the amount of power they could generate using this method.
