Sony and Ericsson first entered in a partnership in 2001, as a mutually beneficial agreement that would boost each company’s handset divisions. However, it looks like that partnership is finally over, as Sony will soon be officially purchasing theirsubsidiarycompany.
The deal is apparently going to cost Sony $1.475 billion dollars.
This is a strategic move for Sony, who will soon be releasing their Playstation Vita in late 2011 and early 2012. Sony also has several tablets in development, as well as some planned upgrades for their Playstation 3 gaming console. This purchase would allow Sony to better integrate compatibility between their devices.
It’ll still be interesting to see if Sony has any plans for releasing their own smartphone in the future.
