With the tail of Jabba and the arms of a Somalian land mine victim, the Telenoid R1 Robot is surprisingly not the most terrifying robot we’ve ever seen. Not by a long shot. But it certainly does rank high on the Gearfuse Scale of Creepiness (patent pending).
This teleoperated communication bot was designed to add a does of realism to long-distance communication. At least as much realism as can be expected talking to a robot that might be more appropriately named Stubby the Hutt. Monitored by real-time face tracking software, the Telenoid mirrors the user’s actions and transmitting voice through its robo-speakers.
