This might not be recent news, but it’s something you probably missed. Apparently retail giant Walmart is scaling back its electronics department, so that the store can make room for a larger selection of “plus sized” clothing options.
Okay, so it’s no secret that Americans are obese. Some statistics even put our obesity rate at around 40%, and that’s not even counting people that are simply classified as overweight. However, the fact that Walmart has to cut back on its electronics selection in order to�accommodate�its “plus sized” customers is definitely an important sign of the times.
Overall, estimates are that Walmart is eliminating 7.2 million square feet of retail space to make room for their larger selection of plus sized clothing, though the size of the departments will vary by store.
