You might not be able to imagine what the internet was like before the debut of YouTube, but there was a time, not too long ago, where internet video went hand in hand with awkward scripting and buggy plug-ins. YouTube changed all that. Five years ago today, the world was forever changed when the first video was uploaded to YouTube at 8:27 PM.
The 19-second video titled “Me at the zoo” shows Jawed Karim, one of YouTube’s founders, talking about elephants of all things, at the San Diego Zoo. Since then YouTube has gone through some significant changes, not the least of which was being bought by Google for $1.65 billion in October 2006. We doubt Karim ever dreamed he would be a mega-millionaire in only a little over a years time.
